About 3 days ago, the predicted weather was 84. Well, it hit 90 with some humidity. Today, so far, it is 75, and I am wearing a light sweater over sleeveless blouse. Rest of week will be high 60s at night. Fall has approached. Another change coming my way will be lack of endless supply of varieties of delicious homemade corba, soup, when I return home. Thanks to everyone for all your birthday greetings, cards, well wishes. Pretty memorable to be celebrating abroad, and having your thoughts with me Being from the suburbs, needless to say, Istanbul with its 20 million population, is overwhelming. It is like a maze in the ancient neighborhoods. Forget trying to return by new routes. Stick to tried and true. Not on a few occasions was my anxiety heightened. Try getting directions when both parties speak totally different languages. My supreme achievement is, added to language barrier, and mazes, going under ground to use rail and metro. I can rest easy now. Figured it out. 3 flights down, take corridor, 3 different flights up, outside, down the street, around the corner, ah, the tunel. Under ground, then outside, cross 2 boulevards, catch metro, heading in correct direction ...ahhh. Correct stop. Then walk rest of way to destination. Hold those straps overhead so you dont fall. Deodorant does not seem to be popular here. (Baths are.) For animal lovers, endless supply of adorable cats here. Cant believe, looking back, I have tackled this at my age, traveling alone. Have resided in 3 distinct neighborhoods, Sultanahmet, Sirkeci, Taksim, my current. Population so thick, cannot walk without bumping everyone. Sidewalks are wide enough for 1 person walking single file. Metros pass you with 2 inches to spare, distance from your shoulder. Best shopping ever. Turks are so hospitable. I am ready for quiet, and I think, country vs city. Oh, dont forget to add to the excitement, cobblestone streets, in a city built on hills. Now, lookin forward to Italy. Love to you all.
