About A Boy.... Yesterday I woke up to sad news. Auburn freshman football player Jakell Mitchell was shot and killed Saturday night at an apartment complex in Auburn. Reading the headline made me sad and angry. Sad because an 18 year old kid who by all accounts was not a troublemaker but a nice, responsible young man is gone and angry for many reasons. I am angry for the pain his parents must suffer burying a child, I am angry that a kid who had so much potential is now gone. I am angry that only the people who follow CFB/sports seemed to care. I am angry that of all the people protesting police murdering Blacks, I saw not ONE of these same people decry THIS murder. This is what gets me about the #BlackLivesMatter protest. Are we supposed to protest ALL killings of Blacks even if by one of our own or just those that are killed by the police? Seems to me it should be ALL lives matter. Ill ask the questions most ask when the race of a victim is used to make a point: Where is the outrage about THIS senseless murder? Where are your hashtags and commentary now? Or do you only protest murders committed by non Blacks towards Blacks? If you are a parent or a human being this should matter. It should matter because Jakell was the 3rd player killed the past 3 years while visiting this apartment complex. It should matter if you have kids in college. It should matter because regardless of his race, he is someones child, brother, friend and teammate. But if I follow YOUR protest criteria, it doesnt matter as much since he was killed by a Black man and that doesnt fit the movement criteria. I saw some of you celebrating the march in New York on behalf of Eric Garner and the fact that there were multiple races represented. But yet and still you wont say we ALL matter, just those of us that are killed by Whites or policemen. How about we all join TOGETHER to protest the senseless killing of ANYONE? How about we acknowledge the fact that we are killing ourselves at a higher rate than policemen? See thats why I cant jump on your bandwagon. Until you realize that ALL lives matter including those taken by members of our own race, I cant join the movement. Any movement that does not acknowledge our own failings as a race and chooses to focus on headline making murders only is not for me. I support the idea but cant support the ideology. ALL Lives Matter not just Black lives and until we COME TOGETHER to fight this war on violence the only thing that will happen is more of it.
