* About Creative Freedom * ~ Abhijit PK haters who have been bashing the movie online and offline have repeatedly drawn comparisons with Vishwaroopam, a Kamal Hassan film that purportedly showed Muslims in bad light. The Tamil Nadu state government had then banned the movie for 15 days as per demands from Muslim groups. Later, after several rounds of negotiations the movie was finally released after muting 5 scenes as per the demands of the Muslim groups. I think its high time we stop justifying one wrong with another. It was wrong to ban Vishwaroopam once the censor board had cleared it. If anyone still needed to protest against the film, the ire should have been directed at the censor board and not at Kamal Hassan or any of the creators of the movie. The same logic should apply in case of PK too. If any group has any issues, they need to raise it at the proper forum. In this case people did file a case with the Supreme Court which rejected the demand for a ban citing, If you dont like it, dont watch the film. Dont bring religious facets here. Now PK haters. those of the Hindu religion and culture is so fragile that movies need to be banned to preserve it fame, have also drawn comparisons with what transpired when a Danish newspaper published cartoons of Prophet Mohammad. Yes, there was a furore when that cartoon was published. Yes, the cartoonists were threatened with dire consequences. Yes, there were riots in many places. Yes, over two hundred people did die in those riots. But the Muslim critics did get sharply criticised, castigated and argued against by most impartial observers. As of today, the cartoons are freely available all over the internet. But the debate is not about the Danish cartoons or Vishwaroopam. The debate is about the willingness of religious groups to allow scrutiny and criticism. I have seen numerous depictions of Jesus Christ in movies and cartoons both. Many of them may be termed offensive too. But isnt offensive content a welcome call to re-evaluate the way a person accepts offending material? What is deemed offensive by one person may be reasonable to another person who may not find it offensive at all. People really need to find better reasons to get offended, or not get offended at all.
