About ISIS/ISIL/The Islamic State: First of all, about the name. Most people are calling them ISIS, which is based on an interpretation of them being in Iraq and Syria... except that thats only sort of accurate, and is rather insulting to people who follow the goddess Isis. ISIL is actually more accurate, because although calling the area involved the Levant is a bit old-fashioned, its also geographically and historically accurate. The group is apparently calling *themselves* The Islamic State as a publicity stunt aimed at getting the western world--thats us--to believe they speak for all Muslims. Which, incidentally, is pissing the rest of the Muslims off, cause no, they dont. So, yeah, theyre bad guys. Violent fundamentalists, who believe that its okay for them to kill people and steal their stuff, because G*d told them its okay. My own pet theory is that, while they clearly do NOT speak for all Muslims... its probably reasonably accurate to say that in some sense, they speak for all fundamentalists... because fundamentalists, regardless of what name they use to refer to their god, do have a tendency to believe its their job to kill people and steal their stuff, because God told them to, because He loves them best. Or something. So yeah. Instead of thinking of it as Christians and Jews and Muslims, maybe try thinking of it as something along the lines of liberals and moderates and fundamentalists... cause its for damned sure that the ones shooting at you arent the liberals or the moderates, you know?
