About Margaret Oliver Ladue .... (#11) Throwback Thursday (well, Friday this time!) This picture was taken at our first ever Lasagna Challenge - to finally settle whose lasagna would be judged to be the very best! We would often joke when we were all together enjoying someones lasagna - that it was good, but that our own homemade lasagna was even better! Mom (Margaret Oliver Ladue) finally called us out on it and suggested a lasagna bakeoff contest to finally settle the matter. So we all accepted Moms challenge - we set a date for the contest and assembled a panel of judges - which included family and friends. Lasagna entries would be judged anonymously - each entry given only a letter (A, B, C, & D) to identify it. Mom also insisted that we each use an identical aluminum pan so that all of the pans would look the same. The day had finally arrived, and four pans of lasagna were entered into the challenge - made by Kimberly, Lisa, Rebecca, and Troy & Mom. My lasagna entry was largely based on Moms traditional recipe - using the specific product brands that Mom had always used when we were growing up. She supervised in the kitchen while I assembled our lasagna entry - adding a few extra touches along the way for good measure. The lasagnas were all heated and cut into pieces - with each judge receiving a plate with four small pieces of lasagna representing the four contest entries. The judges were asked to rate each entry on a scale of 1 to 5 - with 5 being the best. The judges recorded their scores and the results were tallied. By one single point, Team Troy & Mom had won! Throughout the day and the entire process, Mom could not have been more excited! It was a fun and memorable day enjoyed by all - and especially by Mom. For those of you who have wondered why we do a cinnamon dessert bakeoff contest every year as part of our annual fundraising event - it is done in tribute to Mom and her idea for the original lasagna bakeoff. We also chose cinnamon as the key ingredient in the contest since Mom loved all things cinnamon - and never more than when she was going through cancer treatment. During which time she would often forget the name of the spice, calling it simply you know, that stuff! - which she enjoyed in large amounts on many of the things she would eat! If you would like to try Moms winning lasagna, you can buy a raffle ticket at our upcoming annual fundraising event in March - where we will once again be raffling off a compete homemade lasagna dinner for four (Moms recipe!) as a raffle prize! The dinner is delivered hot and ready to serve - including a large garden salad with croutons & dressings, garlic bread, a bottle of wine, a large pan of lasagna, and dessert!
