About Time: Another comedy from the pen of Richard Curtis, the man who brought you "Four Wingdings and a Fumerole", "Knotting Bill" and "Live Actuary". The plot revolves around a father informing his son that the men in his family have the ability to travel through time but only within his own lifetime (Quantum Leap anyone?) Thus giving the men the ability to go back and have a second (or third or fourth) bash at getting things right (usually involving interactions with girls), with occasional unexpected and comedic outcomes Curtis, who used to be unable to make a film without Hugh Grant, now seems incapable of making one without Bill Nighy. Dohmnall Gleeson (son of Brendon) is very good in this, he plays the Hugh Grant role of a slightly awkward man (especially around the girls) who narrates the story throughout (a la Love Actually). That is not to say that this film is formulaic, far from it, but it does scream "I am a Curtis Movie" throughout All of the above notwithstanding, this is a good film, the comedy is far gentler than we have come to expect from Curtis. But the story is poignant and well told. The acting is first class as you would expect from the likes of Bill Nighy, Tom Hollander et al. and I recommend it to anyone who wants a nice, gentle, humorous night out.
