About a third of the way through reading Reza Aslans new book Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth. Anybody have any experience with this book? Its been vilified by the right, of course, and their reaction was best summed up during the authors FOX News interview, during which the interviewer basically said What right do you, a MUSLIM, have to write a book about the life of Jesus? thus implying, of course, that no one but Christians are qualified to know or say anything about the life of Jesus (you know, kind of like how only gun-owners are entitled to have an opinion about gun ownership). The book is focused on supportable historic information about what life was like in Palestine around the time of Jesus life (about which it turns out there is a remarkably good amount of documentation--the Romans were apparently very assiduous record keepers), and it definitely calls into question many elements of the biblical description about life in that time and place. If you count yourself a Christian and you have any interest at all in actually casting an objective historical light on your belief system, I highly recommend you give this book a look.
