About a year ago, I had a student (Marcus Jackson) present on Victor LaValles essay How The Invisible Man Taught Me to See. He ended his presentation asking the class how often they read books outside of their race. The silence was shocking. I am thinking about this in relationship to this amazing Azealia Banks interview. Art is all about connecting people from widely different backgrounds and historical periods; commerce is solely invested in affirmation of the consumer. Art should make you nervous and uncomfortable (other cultures would have/do called/call these feelings thoughtful and engaged) while commerce only wants you to want comfort.
