About an hour ago, a federal jury convicted former three-term Conn. Gov. John Rowland on seven counts of violating campaign finance laws. Ten years ago, those of us in the Connecticut capitol press corps joked that Johnny Gee, as he was affectionately known around the press room, was the gift that kept on giving. (For those of you who dont know, Rowland resigned as governor in the summer of 2004 and later that year pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges, spending 10 months in a federal prison.) Today, reporters in Connecticut who cover corruption are resurrecting the line. Its a sad say for politics, a sad day for Connecticut and a sad day for people who want to believe in this countrys campaign finance system.
