About four years ago I was packing up my small town life to pursue bigger adventures in the city. It was my first move, my first transition, my first cultural change. I was nervous yet confidently excited, trusting ever so naively in the unknown. In the years to come, my experience navigating uncharted territory tore me down and built me back up again. Deerfield, IL yielded the deepest of friendships, the toughest adversities and the most unforgettable sentiments-impacting me regardless of my compliance or resistance. Here I am back in Rockton four year later, blessed with a bachelors, secure job in hand, and the same feeling in my gut. So shaky yet so sure the next step ahead of me in Missouri is stamped with the Lords approval. As I journey I collect remnants of places Ive been. Similar to a tree my roots formed in Roscoe/Rockton, my branches grew in the Chicago suburbs, blossoms emerged in the mountains of Costa Rica, shores of South Carolina, hills of Nashville and forests of Michigan. All of these towns and cities are with me-have changed me-are changed by me. And now heres to Independence, Missouri. The next branch on the tree. The next home of shelter and adversity and inevitable transformation. As 18 year old, college bound Rachel once said, This is the place where I met my best friend. Where I chose my fights and learned to make amends. Leaving this scene with my hopes and my dreams, knowing damn well what this place means.
