About internationalisation at the Festival. The extract from my speech at the programme launch today: Just over twenty years ago, through a cultural boycott South Africa was culturally isolated. The National Arts Festival this year will be a dynamic showcase of our interconnectedness with the world. This year, across the Main, Arena, Fringe and Student Theatre programme and spread across various genres we will showcase work from Argentina, USA, Canada, the UK, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Australia, Belgium, Norway, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Mauritius, Madagascar and China. In a quest for our inter-connectedness with the world, the Festival’s history has over the past four decades been problematically disconnected with the African continent. This year, we are delighted that we will be showcasing the work of artists from Algeria, Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda and Uganda. For all these international partnerships, we wish to express our appreciation to the various embassies, High Commissions, diplomatic missions and international funding agencies with whose support we are able to fly our flag with the rest of the globe
