About my Concerto For Piano and Orchestra: It was commissioned - TopicsExpress

About my Concerto For Piano and Orchestra: It was commissioned in part by the Nashville Ballet and the performances in May are…well, they’re kinda the point. My gig was to compose a piece for ballet so these shows will be very special. This is the one I’m flying family and friends to, etc. (The premiere last month with the Symphony was SUPPOSED to sort of be the warm up gig but turned into quite a big deal when all three nights sold out quickly). Watching the choreography come together is AMAZING. Im gonna have to keep looking down at my piano or a tear might roll out of my eye. I spent last year composing a piano concerto. In my mind, it’s just my new song. Except that it’s 25 minutes long in three movements and requires 60 or more musicians to bring it to life. I put everything into this piece and then had to seriously improve my piano playing in order to perform it. The notion of a piano concerto written by a rock musician in this century is so completely out of step that I HAD to do it. As it turns out, a lot of people feel the same way and the performances of it have already been highlights of my performing career for me. You never know... The rest of my year will be a lot of pops orchestra touring (each night including one movement of the concerto), some solo shows, making my new record and starting into a musical theater project. I’m recording the concerto soon as part of my new record. The rest of the record are the songs I’m writing to be recorded in some unusual configurations and the musicians, groups and collaborators I’m going to get to work with makes me happeeee. I think it might be really good. That’s all. Ben nashvilleballet/performances_and_tickets/ben_folds_2014 BEN FOLDS PROJECT w/ NASHVILLE BALLET & NASHVILLE SYMPHONY MAY 2, 3, 4 TPAC
