About picards and guarding; our Diego works nights as a watchman. He has done so since the tender age of 7 months when mama Valise apparently told him to take his part in protecting our family at night. After having her litter, and all puppies but Diego had moved, Valise spent the nights in the hallway, just inside the front door. At 7 months Diego started doing that from 2 am, Valise then went to sleep in the bedroom. We never told Diego to get out into the hallway, so why did he? Gradually his shifts grew longer, until Valise spent the entire nights with us. This was in an apartment in town. When we moved to this house in the country, this meant Diego did not even spend the nights at the same floor as us. I asked him to join us, but no. The evening of the day we lost Valise to illness Diego went upstairs for the nights, but he still keeps alert. When we are at home he wakes us up at around 6.30. Not because he wants to go outside, he wants to sleep! Meanwhile, Cilla sleeps through the nights, and by now has learned not to disturb her uncle before 11 am. Perhaps I am reading too much into this behaviour, but I´m fascinated by it.
