About ten years ago, I suggested to an administrator that it was mathematically quite doable to solve the programming problem at dewey, but then she said, No, it is not as easy as you think; we have 3000 kids, and each has to pick 8 classes. Well, nowadays DOE, with the help of three economists, is using exactly the same game theoretical algorithms to solve a much bigger problem - how to match students with their dream school.
