About ten years ago, I suggested to an administrator that it was mathematically quite doable to solve the programming problem at dewey, but then she said, No, it is not as easy as you think; we have 3000 kids, and each has to pick 8 classes. Well, nowadays DOE, with the help of three economists, is using exactly the same game theoretical algorithms to solve a much bigger problem - how to match students with their dream school. Sigh why can the DOE require all future administrators to take some real useful classes like mechanism design that teaches them how to solve matching problems like this so that they wont get stuck in the stone age? nytimes/2014/12/07/nyregion/how-game-theory-helped-improve-new-york-city-high-school-application-process.html?ref=nyregion
