About the report on MT: I work as a translator, and I am quite sure that translation as a profession is doomed in the not-too-distant future. Or as one of your commenters said, it will be relegated to post-editing of machine translation and smaller, specialized translation in niche areas. Currently I already run nearly every sentence I translate through Google Translate, just to see if, within a larger sentence, it can provide a slightly better word, phrasing, or syntax than what I can come up with. Around 20-30% of the time, it can. And around 5-10% of the time, Google gives me a perfect translation of the entire sentence. Its quite amazing, and these numbers will just keep rising in the next few years. Bills probably right that it will never be 100% correct all the time, but it doesnt have to be for the vast majority of people who need something translated, and MT will be more than sufficient for them. So I imagine that in the next 10-20 years there wont be much of a demand of human translators.
