About two weeks ago I sent a group email through supportgroups@readaustralia with subject Are you ready for week 1? I gathered from a couple of posts today that it didnt arrive. Aaaargggh ! Jodi (Office manager) is away til Tuesday and has the group email list, so will resend then. In the meantime this covers what I think I wrote !! Em Everyone needs their spelling clouds on walls from day 1. All 67. Yes, ALL need to be up from day 1. You will refer to these all the time, regardless of code level each child is focusing on. Prep, Year 1 and 2. You need your book boxes set up - Green, Purple, Yellow, Blue, Pot Luck. Put green, purple, yellow and blue stickers on the readers so the children put them back into the right boxes:-) Put Speedy Sentences, Raps etc in there as well as readers. Also download to tablets eg https://youtube/watch?v=HXulm9EJtlQ Bookmark sspreaders as I will add all new readers to that site over the year. You need a Speech Sound table- the speech sound changes twice a week. It is important that parents understand that it is not a letter that is a focus - eg s - it is a speech sound. So if the speech sound is sss, then you could have a c/a/st/le g/r/a/ss sc/e/n/t etc - ie anything that links with this speech sound. They will listen to the words, duck hand, lines and number them. Have a Product Box box for Speech Sound Detective work. Put out magnifying glasses for Preps and Year 1s. Ask parents to send in product boxes the children relate to, and are likely to know eg Frosties rather than laundry detergent:-) https://youtube/watch?v=eTwrC2EvIjA You need a Kings Helpful Word table - have the coded high frequency words (Duck Levels) on this, a tablet or laptop with the coded sight word brain training videos and a whiteboard so the children can practice using duck hands, lines and numbers to spell all words- starting at Duck Level 1. (members area- Coded Sight Words) Have a range of toys ready for daily phonemic awareness training eg as shown here. https://youtube/watch?v=iCpLtPVTruk Code your labels. Black/ grey/ black etc- to show how the words are split for mapping. Print and laminate table top resources- letter formation, first 100 high frequency words (coded) and the four code level sound pics. (members area- printable resources) Make sure you have everything ready for the activities within the two hour literacy block, and assessment tools (Preps just need the phonemic awareness check) (Assessing and Monitoring Progress page in members area) ie * Speedy Decoding In week 1 you do this as a whole class- you code (follow the sounds) and they say the word. Let them look at the Pocket Rocket readers. See who can hear the words (they are blending the speech sounds you are reading from the readers) Reminder of what you are leading up to. https://youtube/watch?v=DKSaqNOFl38 * Brain Training Videos (when ready for this - not in first two weeks of Prep or Year 1 if they have not done SSP before) Instead, do lots of phonemic awareness ! Play speech sound bingo, ensure that the children become familiar with Green Level visual prompts. Lots of Duck Hands, lines and numbers (use the pre-made cards with lines already there) - eg find the monster sipping, say the word sip duck hand it left to right (s/i/p) then find the part on the card with 3 lines. Play the Speech Sound Piano - ie wiggle fingers on each sound. Where does the sss speech sound sit? (number 1) what sits n number 3? (puh) etc. Check who knows colours, numbers while doing these activities. https://youtube/watch?v=iCpLtPVTruk Use this time to speak in speech sounds and record how the children are progressing. https://youtube/watch?v=8bKU5ccN4cg Use the Letter Formation video - you could just show 5 letters per day. Do this every day. If you blast these children form all 26 letters of the alphabet in 3 weeks, even if they cant automatically recall what they might represent. No letter names in the first few weeks! * Student Poster (start the phonemic awareness part in week 1, coding in week 2 and onwards) Reminder of how to use it. https://youtube/watch?v=yVB2oag-XDc * The Speedy Six. Used in all year levels. You will start to plan these using what you have noticed within their writing etc. https://youtube/watch?v=5tiO5p10MEg * Rapid Writing/ Cracking Comprehension Rapid Writing Watch this as a reminder of starting them off with forming sentences using duck hands and lines only. https://youtube/watch?v=6QLrF1cX03E You can start off the session with some warm ups for sound pic choices, blending, manipulation... https://youtube/watch?v=YSBdqtpw6aE You might also quickly go through some of the Duck Levels. https://youtube/watch?v=LvZytm-itT0 Cracking Comprehension Use Snap and Crack for Phase 2. While learning to code you can also do a lot of oral comprehension activities. * Silly Rhyme Time eg https://youtube/watch?v=VgsYrE3INPU Have fun with rhymes ! Download the SSP Spelling App onto ipads. (free) Download the Pocket Phonics App onto ipads. (there is a free version) Download the Fitzroy Readers onto ipads. About $13 for each set of 10 books I think) Download the Pocket Rocket readers onto android tablets. Years 3 - 7 You need to know their starting points so use the Assessment Video and give all their own assessment sheets to fill in. https://youtube/watch?v=_YOIiXQI9yc Date, and make notes. You might need to take the whole class through Phase 2 for the first term, just in case any are still learning to read and spell ie if any are still on PM levels (under 30). You need to rapidly move them up as we dont want any students still on PM levels in term 2. When the majority are ready, move the class to Phase 3, but give the students who are still in Phase 2 some extra time daily. You dont need to send them anywhere, and you can use peer mentoring for this. When they get to Phase 3 you can use any comprehension program like Cars and Stars within the Cracking Comprehension segment. Until then use the coded comprehension texts. If you create your own please share !!!! We will be collaborating with Big Write here in AU to incorporate VCOP into Rapid Writing, to really blast the grammar, punctuation, vocabulary knowledge and use etc. You will be using the members area all year, and after the current training schedule Ill be adding a lot more. Use the Site Map to quickly see where all pages are. Start using the Support Forum for collaboration. Ill be videoing my work in pre-school- follow the highlights each week if you can, to see how these fabulous children move to big school this time next year as independent readers. Those using SSP in high school as an intervention? Ill be posting separately about this. Teacher PD DVD shows all of this ! Miss Emma wiringbrains
