About two years ago, I was on my way back to work from lunch when one of my neighbors yelled across the street to me for help. When I got to her yard, she explained to me that her sweet little dog had dug up a rabbits nest and killed one of the bunnies. She was traumatized by the site and asked me if I could help her dispose of the bunny so her dog wouldnt eat it. As I got close to the nest, I could see the little bunny, still hairless with unopened eyes, laying outside the nest in the blazing sun. I could see two injuries to its head just above the left eye and in front of the left ear from the dogs teeth or nails and they were bleeding, though not profusely. I waited a few moments before confirming that it was not moving. As I picked him up to remove him from her yard, I began to recite in my heart a little memorial to life for him and wished his departing energy well, as I would appreciate that kind of random kindness in my final moments. It was just before I got to where I decided I would lay him to rest that I felt him jolt and then begin to squirm around a little in my hand. Slowly I opened my hands, and saw this little face pop up and sniff around. After spending a minute or two checking him out and softly petting his back with my finger, I decided that I thought that he would survive and so I placed him back in the nest with the rest of the bunnies, covered it back up lightly with grass, then blocked the area off from the dog. Over the next few days, I observed the mother come back to the nest. I had always hoped that the little guy I placed back in the nest had pulled through. Today at lunch, I noticed a rabbit in my yard. At first I didnt think much of it, as rabbits have been thick this year and I see one in my yard daily. However, this rabbits demeanor was different. It didnt seem the least bit frightened. It came directly across my backyard, straight for me, then stopped about two feet in front of me and just looked up at me and turned its head. Thats when I saw the scars... one just above its left eye and another just in front of the left ear. While I cant prove that it was the same rabbit, I know it was. This little guy recognized me and came up to say hi and thank you. It absolutely made my day and absolutely reaffirmed my belief in being kind to your surroundings, just because. Nature really does appreciate it.
