Abraham Pais had seen it all. all the ups and down possible. Life can seem anything but dull when you are a Jewish born particle physicist in Nazi invaded Netherlands. He was a very bright researcher among the youngsters of quantum physics in 40s Europe and had caught the attention Prof. Niels Bohr . He had been dodging Nazi claws for several years but was arrested before he could join Bohr in Denmark. When the war was over , he went on assisting Bohr for a year. But the best was yet to come. In 1947 a long distance call from J. Robert Oppenheimer changed his life. He joined Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton , where one of his colleagues happened to bear the name (as he would like to mention)-Albert Einstein. The next 25 years of Paiss life saw a brilliant particle physicist emerging with immense talent. but he had more to contribute. He wrote two fascinating biographies of Bohr and Einstein and chronicled the cultural and scientific development of modern physics in Twentieth Century Physics . A biography of Oppenheimer was posthumously published after his death in 2000. The Genius of Science: A portrait gallery tells the story of 17 prominent physicists of 20th century whom he knew personally or in most cases , worked with. The list bears some names like Niels Bohr, Max Born, Paul Dirac, Albert Einstein, John von Neumann, Wolfgang Pauli .... What could be better than a collection of biographies of modern day pioneer physicists by Abraham Pais, who could any time be on that list as well.
