Absolutely gutting news this morning, to get up and see Brian Keenes post that Jesus F. Gonzalez has died. For some reason, I’d thought he was responding well to treatment. This leaves a hole in the universe. I first encountered Jesus through INIQUITIES, his great magazine with Buddy Martinez, then at numerous conventions, and linked up during a few of my sojourns in Los Angeles. But the memory I keep coming back to is the one defined by his absence. Jesus and Wayne Allen Sallee and Billy Martin roomed together at the convention where Jesus met Cathy. Which is to say, he bunked with us for the first night, then was nowhere to be found … just his luggage at the end of one of the beds. Even then, he must’ve known: She was the one for him. I say it periodically: One of my favorite things to see is people finding each other. I just wish they’d had a longer road to walk.
