Abstract: Today, mobile communications network for public - TopicsExpress

Abstract: Today, mobile communications network for public transportation vehicles are mostly based on 3G/4G connectivity. However, serving up to over 1000 passengers per train with Internet connectivity on top of internal applications such as video surveillance need much more bandwidth than one mobile carrier can deliver. Furthermore, the achievable throughput of current 3G/4G technology may drop down to a few hundred kbps at speeds of 200km/h and when handovers occur between base stations. The goal of this research project is to define a network architecture that is able to feed public transportation vehicles with the highest possible network capacity by using all available mobile networks (from different carriers) concurrently and by using all available technologies (3G, 4G and WLAN) concurrently. We introduce a proxy based network architecture to link the public transportation vehicles with the fixed networks. We evaluate various traffic distribution algorithms that are able to cope with the dynamically changing quality of the available wireless uplinks. Because of the lack of feedback mechanism, such algorithm must detect the actual transmission capacity of the mobile cells without using too much bandwidth for the measurements itself. A proof-of-concept implementation currently in development will verify how well our approach is able to aggregate all available uplink throughput dynamically.
