Abstract of the talk on March 14 by Dr. Michele Mosca Quantum computing and cryptography Information is stored and manipulated in a physical system, and thus any realistic model of computation and communication must be cast in a realistic physical framework. A century ago, the quantum paradigm for physics was introduced in order to resolve several open problems. Later in the 20th century, the consequences of this paradigm for computation and communication were explored. A quantum computer could solve some important problems exponentially faster than we believe is possible with conventional classical devices. Quantum communication brings us unbreakable cryptographic primitives that are not possible in a classical paradigm. Quantum technologies redefine which cryptographic tools are secure, and thus there is an urgent need to update our cryptographic infrastructure to be secure in a world with these emerging quantum technologies. There will be an overview of what quantum information is, and how it impacts computation and cryptography.
