[Abu Anas Sidheeque M. A. Veliankode, (Riyadh, KSA)] • MEETING YOUR BROTHER CHEERFULLY IS REWARDED FROM ALLAH Meeting somebody cheerfully is also a virtue for two reasons. Firstly, it is a sign of good manners. Secondly, it creates affection and friendship among the Muslims which is a meritorious act. So love each other for the noble cause and best sake of Allah and avoid all types of hate and hatred, enmity and animosity. Be brothers and friends in the only religion of Allah. Abu Dharr (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (swalla-Allaahu alayhi wa-sallam) said, (( لا تَحْقِرنَّ مِنَ المَعرُوفِ شَيئاً وَلَوْ أنْ تَلقَى أخَاكَ بِوَجْهٍ طَليقٍ )) "Do not belittle or disdain any good deed (no matter how small it may seem), even if it is your meeting with your (Muslim) brother with a cheerful face". [Reported by Saheeh Muslim, Hadith # 2626 (8/37)]. Every deed approved by the Shari`ah is considered good and rewarding. Howsoever seemingly small people may consider it, it must not be looked at from a highbrow angle. Even to meet people cheerfully is one of the Islamic virtues and high values, though it may appear quite insignificant to some people. In Islam, it is not spending money alone that counts as charity; talking to somebody in a decent way also comes in the same context. Now, one can feel the importance Islam gives to moral values and good manners. Allah, the Exalted, says: وَعِبَادُ الرَّحْمانِ الَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى الأرْضِ هَوْناً وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلاَمَاً "And the (faithful) slaves of the Most Gracious (Allah) are those who walk on the earth in humility and sedateness, and when the foolish address them (with bad words) they reply back with mild words of gentleness.' (Al-Quran, Surah Al-Furqaan 25:63) `Aishah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I have never seen Messenger of Allah (swalla-Allaahu alayhi wa-sallam) laughing so heartily that his uvula could be seen. He used to smile only. [Reported by Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Hadith # 4828 (6/167), and Saheeh Muslim, Hadith # 899, 16 (3/26)]. To laugh much is one of the sign of indifference to the remembrance of Allah. Besides, the habit of laughing aloud robs away the dignity and impressiveness of a man. Allah, the Exalted, says: وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنينَ "And lower your wings for the believers (be courteous to the fellow-believers).' (Al-Quran, Surah Al-Hijr 15:88). Allah, the Exalted, says: وَلَوْ كُنْتَ فَظّاً غَلِيظَ القَلْبِ لانْفَضُّوا مِنْ حَوْلِكَ "And had you been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about you.' (Al-Quran, Surah Aal-Imraan 3:159) Charity or Sadaqah has great benefits and even in its minimum scope and quantity it can ensure our safety against Hell-fire. We are told that if we do not have even a single date or half of it to give to a needy person, we can manage to have the same benefit by friendly talking to him in a compassionate tone with cheerful, provided we have Faith in our heart. `Adi bin Hatim (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (swalla-Allaahu alayhi wa-sallam) said, (( اتَّقُوا النَّارَ وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ فَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ فَبِكَلِمَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ )) "Guard yourselves against the Fire (of Hell) even if it be only with half a date-fruit (given in charity); and if you cannot afford even that, you should at least say a good word.' [Reported by Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Hadith # 1417 (2/136), 7512 (9/181) and Saheeh Muslim, Hadith # 1016, 67, 68 (3/86)]. [By: Abu Anas Sidheeque M. A. Veliankode, (Riyadh, KSA)]
