Abu Dhabi: An Iranian man accused of kissing a woman in public said he was only helping her open her vehicle door when they were spotted by the police, the Abu Dhabi Court of Appeals heard on Thursday. The defendant who has investments in a mobile phone shop and a clothing store told the court that he was at Port Zayed when he got a call from the second defendant, who was also his client. “[The woman] told me that her mobile phone was not working and needed repairs. So I informed her that I was running a few errands at the port and that she can come bring it to me. When she arrived, she gave me her device and I asked her if she needed a ride home, and so I dropped her off,” he said. The defence lawyer Fayza Mousa, revealed that the second defendant was sitting in the back seat when the man got out of the car to open the door for her as the door-handle from her side was broken. “I then carried on with my errands and was cashing a cheque when a patrol car stopped me and accused me of kissing the woman although I did not. They even arrested me and made me sign a confession written in Arabic at the police station,” he added. Mousa alleged that her client was not asked whether he speaks Arabic and was not assigned a legal translator during the investigation. Presiding Judge Dr Khairy Ahmad Al Kabash, Head of the Third Criminal Department at Abu Dhabi’s Appellate Court adjourned the hearing until the beginning of next month.
