Abu Idrees Al-Khawalani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I entered the Masjid of Damascus and I found a young man with radiant teeth around whom the people had gathered. If they disagreed about anything, they would refer it to him and follow his opinion. It was said, “This is Mu’adh ibn Jabal.” The next day, I went early but I found that he had arrived before me and he already was praying. I waited for him to finish his prayer and then I came to him. I greeted him and then said, “By Allah, I love you for the sake of Allah.” He said, “By Allah?” I said, “By Allah.” He asked, “By Allah?” I replied, “By Allah.” He again asked, “By Allah?” I replied again, “By Allah!” He then took my garment from its lower end and pulled me toward him and he said, “Rejoice! For I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say that Allah the Exalted said: My love is obligatory for those who love each other for My sake, who sit together for My sake, who visit each other for My sake, who spend on each other for My sake.” - Narrated by Imam Ahmad in Musnad, no. 21525 and Imam Malik in Muwatta, no. 1779. Classed as saheeh by Imam Nawawi in his tahqeeq of Riyadh as saliheen, no 182, classed as saheeh by Imam ibn al Qayyim in tahdheeb al sunan 14/30, classed as saheeh by Ibn Abd al-Barr in al tamheed 5/146. (A reminder to myself first and foremost)
