Abu Mazen and company seem to be thinking outside the box in an effort to revive talks toward a feasible and pragmatic two state solution that would be acceptable to both sides. They hope to first gain the support of the international community in order to leverage their bargaining power when they put the proposal on the negotiating table. They will propose an economic federation between Israel, Palestine and Jordan, an idea that dates back to the UN1948 partition proposal. The revival of this old plan seems to have been triggered in part by the failure of Israel to destroy Hamas in the Gaza war and by the political alignment of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the PA in response to the threat from extremist Islamist movements.
