Abu Qatada al-Filistini on recent events in Syria Publication date: 5 March 2014 Omar Osman, a Jordanian scholar of Palestinian origin, also known as Abu Qatada al-Filistini, criticized imposing jizya in Syria in an interview with the newspaper Al-Hayat. He spoke about the imposition of jizya (Islamic tax) on Christians in the Syrian city of Raqqa, controlled by the units of Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL). He also compared the killing of Abu Khalid al-Suri to the murder of Caliph Ali (may Allah bless him). The interview with Abu Qatada was held in front of the Jordanian State Security Court which accuses the Islamic scholar under articles on terrorism. It was held on February 27 - the day after the announcement by the ISIL-controlled media of imposition of jizya on the territory of Raqqa. The scholar in particular said: Imposing a jizya on Christian residents of Raqqa is not permissible by Sharia, because there should be a contract between two parties, and here one party is absent. He added: Mujahideen in Syria do not yet have [sufficient] power, and they cannot protect lives and property of Christians under the current conditions. It is religiously unacceptable for us to take their money and not to provide them with a service. Earlier, the ISIS command announced it had reached an agreement with 12 provisions, aimed to ensure the protection of Christians in Raqqa. The group also warned that anyone who does not respect the agreement will be treated as an enemy. Commenting on the murder of the representative of Ayman al-Zawahiri in Syria, Abu Khalid al-Suri, who was killed on Feb. 23, 2014 by two suicide attackers, and for which no one has claimed responsibility so far, Abu Qatada said: I am very sad about the killing of Mujahid Abu Khaled. I never expected that he would die from the hands of these criminals who adopted a deviant ideology. Al-Suri’s killing resembled the murder of the Caliph Ali, may Allah bless him, who was killed by the criminal [Abdel Rahman] Ibn Muljam, continued Abu Qatada, - [the death] of Abu Khalid was a great loss for us. I knew him well. His loss is like the loss of Mujahid Sheikh Osama bin Laden. Earlier, Emir of Jabhat al-Nusrah, Abu Muhammad al-Joulani, accused the ISIL of the death of the associate of bin Laden and al-Zawahiri, urging proceedings in a Sharia court and end of fighting against each other, and in case of a refusal to do so, to leave the territory of Syria within five days. It is to be recalled that the ISIL denies any involvement in the murder and said that al-Suri was allegedly killed by members of his own circle. Asked by a journalist of Al-Hayat on the demands put forward by al-Joulani, Abu Qatada expressed his full support: I support everything al-Joulani said. Targeting Mujahideen in this disgraceful manner is unacceptable. It is their right to defend themselves. But Abu Qatada did not supported al-Joulani in another issue. Emir of Jabhat al-Nusrah vowed that in case of ISILs failure to come to a Sharia court, to fight them in Syria and in Iraq. In a record of a telephone conversation with Abu Qatada, circulated on Internet and obviously carried out from prison, he calls the murderers of Abu Khalid al-Suri criminals but urges not to go to war against the ISIL. Abu Qatada concluded his speech as follows: Our primary goal is fighting the criminal regime in Damascus, but filth along the way must be eliminated. Those who adopt deviant ideology should stop [their actions]. He continued: I can confirm today that the ISIL is not a unified group. Those close to the ISIL confirmed to me that this organization is composed of groups without leadership or a unifying system. This jihad will reach its final goal in Syria, but we are waiting for the blessing of the jihad from other countries. Department of Monitoring Kavkaz Center
