Abuja - The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Friday listed five Super Eagles players among the list of the 2013 African Player of the Year. This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) by CAF on Friday. The statement from CAF listed the players to include, the Super Eagles’ captain and goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, Ahmed Musa and Emmanuel Emenike; who are forward players. Others are the mid-field sensational, John Mikel Obi and Warri Wolfes’ Sunday Mba. It said that 25 players made the cut for the flagship African Player of the Year category, and 21 made the African Player of the Year, based in Africa. The reigning African Player of the Year, Ivorian Yaya Toure, two of his compatriots, Didier Drogba and Yao Kouassi Gervais ‘Gervinho’ made the exalted list of African footballers. Two players each from Ghana, Egypt, Cape Verde and Algeria also made the African Player of the Year category. There was one nominee each from Senegal, Kenya, Burkina Faso, Mali, Ehiopia, Guinea, Cameroon, Morocco and Gabon. The list of nominees for CAF’s African Player of the Year, based in Africa, included the reigning Mohamed Aboutrika of Egypt, and only Nigeria’s Sunday Mba made the list. Four players from Tunisia’s local league made the second list; while Cameroon, Egypt and South-Africa have three nominees each. Ehiopia has two, while Cote D’Ivoire, Tanzania, Zambia, DR Congo, Nigeria and Mali have a nominee each. The eventual winners for both categories will be announced at the Glo-CAF Awards Gala scheduled for Thursday, January 9, 2014 in Lagos.
