Academic Advisor Alabama State University - Montgomery, AL Provide and coordinate academic advisement services; maintain accurate, well organized advising records. Create a warm, friendly and helpful environment for advising students. Examples of Duties: Duties and Responsibilities : •Develop and maintain accurate knowledge of University’s Policies, Programs and Procedures, Student Handbook, Undergraduate Catalog, Academic Advisement Center’s Reference Guide and interpret these for students when necessary. •Develop and maintain accurate knowledge of general and specific curricular and core requirements for students in a caseload. •Review and analyze available data on students to assess their individual needs and potential in order to assist them with their program. •Stimulate an awareness of options in academic majors and assist students in making suitable choices. •Collect, through the use of tests, high school records and interviews, information on students that are pertinent to the advising process. •Assist students in gaining knowledge of various academic programs and guide them in planning a program of study compatible with their career, interests and goals. •Design and implement referral counseling on and off campus for students who are troubled, who lack direction, who need redirection, or who find themselves in crisis situations. •Provide students with tentative course selections during Advisement Week and assist them in planning a course schedule each term that fulfills the requirements of their program of study. •Approve students’ proposed course schedule each term. •Approve student’s request for adding courses each term. •Confer with dean and/or appropriate department chair regarding courses or schedule adjustments. •Implement an Early Alert Program each term and work with at-risk students. •Collect data for the preparation of retention/attrition reports. •Consult with students experiencing academic difficulty; assist them in identifying reasons for their academic difficulty and advise them to repeat course(s) that will enable them to bring their academic performance up to an acceptable level. •Conduct workshops, seminars and programs to facilitate the academic Prepare Interpret academic tests to assure the appropriate placement in the correct courses. •Update students’ advisement folders each semester. •Attend one professional conference on academic advising during the year. •Perform other related duties assigned by the Dean, College of Business Administration. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : •Considerable knowledge of counseling and advisement theories, practices and procedures. •Ability to motivate students toward goal-directed program. •Ability to establish and maintain effective, working relationships with students, faculty, staff and work effectively both within a team and individually. •Possess computer skills. •Ability to interpret and implement policies and directives. •Ability to maintain accurate records. •Must keep abreast of changes in University’s policies, procedures and programs. •Candidates must demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills, strong organizational, interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Minimum Qualifications: A Master’s degree in guidance/counseling with at least 3 years of experience as an Academic Advisor or Academic Counselor required or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
