Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) has threatened to withdraw its membership of the Committee of Needs Assessment of Nigerian (Public) Universities (CNANU) “if the committee inserts bogus project admin cost, pinching, and pilfering of the budgeted funds.” In a letter addressed to the chairman of the committee, Gabriel Suswam, President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge, raised an nine-point observed lapses already noticed in the implementation of the reports as approved by FEC and NEC, and asked that they be corrected “immediately.” Some of the ASUU’s grievances included the non-establishment of a committee to start working on the Technical Report of the NEC Committee that was approved by the NEC and FEC, the sourcing of the initial N100 billion to be used for the stimulation of the process which is already shrouded in secrecy and the release of the paltry sum of N100 billion of the 2009 ASUU/ FGN Agreement and the Jan 2012 MoU, a far cry from what is due for 2012 and 2013, which is N500 billion. He said: “ASUU is equally concerned over the absence of a clear procedure or process for assessing the funds by the universities. While due process must be followed, it is the sole responsibility of benefitting universities to respect all the provisions of the Procurement Act.” It added that the idea of the committee going to the Due Process Office for the purpose of awarding contracts would never be acceptable to the union.
