Accident Assessment: A 49-year-old male diver and his buddy were conducting an ocean shore dive with a group of local divers. The maximum depth was 55 feet (16.7m) using air as their breathing gas. Approximately 20 minutes into the dive, the diver began to feel unwell and signaled to his buddy that he needed to surface. The diver required assistance from his buddy and they were able to make a controlled ascent. His buddy had to help him to shore. The diver complained of feeling extremely dizzy to the point that he could not stand, so the group leader contacted DAN. He described the symptoms that the diver was experiencing. The diver denied any problems with equalization. Toward the end of the conversation, the group leader stated that the diver informed him he has a history of atrial fibrillation (heart dysrhythmia). The DAN Medic recommended calling 911 immediately and, if available, supplying high-flow oxygen to the diver. What do you suspect? Was this course of action appropriate?
