Accident Assessment: A group of divers participated in two boat dives from a Caribbean resort. The first dive was 25 min with a maximum depth of 90 feet (27.4 m) and a surface interval time of 90 min. The second dive was 35 minutes with a maximum depth of 65 feet (19.8 m). Both dives were multilevel with compressed air as the breathing gas. After the second dive, a 38-year-old female diver was observed to be very quiet and even withdrawn, which her friend reported to be unusual behavior for her. He also noted that she was vigorously shaking her right hand as though to stimulate blood flow. When questioned, she denied any problems and repeatedly asked to be left alone. Ultimately, the diver was given space. About an hour after returning to her room at the resort, she acknowledged that she was frightened because she did not feel right. She was taken to the local hospital, evaluated and treated for DCS. Should her change in demeanor have been taken more seriously? Was it correct to respect her desire to be left alone?
