Accident Assessment Answer: This is an all too common chain of events. The situation could have been prevented with more diligent monitoring of each others air supply. The use of proper hand signals was essential and a credit to both divers; however, the diver who was out of air made a critical error by grasping his buddys BCD straps with both hands. Two of the most commonly recommended methods are for each diver to either grasp the other divers right BCD strap or interlock their right forearms. This allows the left hand to be free to operate the inflator/deflator mechanism. Release of expanding air from the BCD and slow ascent protocols should still be observed to maintain control. Air-sharing skills should be practiced and/or refreshed periodically. This reinforces proper technique and procedures and can significantly increase safety. This situation did not result in injury, but could have easily been disastrous.
