Accident: Lufthansa A343 at Dallas on Aug 8th 2014, bird strike By Simon Hradecky: avherald Absolute Aviation English. A Lufthansa Airbus A340-300, registration D-AIGM performing flight LH-439 from Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was climbing through 2000 feet out of runway 17R when the crew observed a large bird hitting the aircraft at the right hand side of the nose. In the absence of any abnormal instrument readings the crew continued the flight to Frankfurt where the aircraft landed safely about 9:50 hours later. A post-flight inspection revealed the bird had left large dents at the right hand nose, parts of the bird went through engine #3 (CFM56), other parts impacted the slats. The aircraft is estimated to remain on the ground in Frankfurt for several more days for maintenance. The Aviation Herald learned on Aug 11th 2014, that the aircraft sustained substantial damage qualifying the occurrence as an accident. On Aug 14th 2014 the aircraft ferried to Dresden (Germany) flying at a maximum cruise level of 090 for repairs.
