Accidental killing of a believer Killing of a person is a very serious crime in the eyes of Allah and in the eyes of people. In most civilised societies , murder of another human being usually carries with it some of the most severe punishment in law. Allah has stated in the Quran, من قتل نفسا بغير نفس اوفسادا في الارض فكانما قتل الناس جميعا.ومن احياها فكانما احيا الناس جميعا... Whosoever kills a person without justification for having killed someone or causes unrest in earth , so he is as though he has killed the whole of mankind. And whosoever saves a life is as though he has saved the whole of mankind.. ... Surah Al-masidah, chapt 5 verse 32. To kill someone deliberately is extremely severe ومن يقتل مؤمنا متعمدا فجزاءه جهنم خالدا فيها وغضب الله عليه ولعنه واعدله عذابا عظيما. Who soever kills a believer deliberately , then his reward is hell, to be entered into it for eternity. Allahs anger will be upon him and his curse and he (Allah) has prepared for them a severe punishment. Surah Al-nisa chapt 4 verse 93. Even to kill someone unintentionally and accidentally is not to be taken lightly as Allah says, وما كان لمؤمن ان يقتل مؤمنا الا خطأ- ومن قتل مؤمنا خطأ فتحرير رقبةمؤمنةودية مسلمة الى اهله الا ان يصدقوا. It is not (fitting or acceptable) for a believer to kill a believer except mistakenly. And whosoever kills a believer mistakenly should set free a muslim slave AND pay diyyat (referred to as blood-money ,100 camels) to his family (of the killed) except if they forgive... Surah Al-nisa chapt 4 verse 92. So if a person killed another believer even accidentally and unintentionally , as well as repenting sincerely ,he/she is required to set free a muslim slave AND give 100 camels to the family of the killed. The 100 camels is known as DIYYAT . If the family forgive part or whole of this , then this is their kindness. If a person who has killed a believer unintentionally and accidentally cannot afford to set free a muslim slave or pay the diyyat then he has to keep sixty consecutive fasts. If this is the case for accidental and unintentional killing, then we can imagine the consequences for deliberate and intended killing.
