Accommodation highs and lows (or shit places to stay).......... After living the high life with Nicolas at Refuge Presset I descended nearly 2000 metres to find myself in the lowlands of Landry, a piss arc away from Bourg St Maurice. Not a lot happens in Landry. First I found a chambre dhote with the lights on but no-one home; thinking I might stay. I burgled some wifi before moving to the only shop in town; a butcher with a bit of general store tacked on. A lovely old couple, blood stained aprons and all, indicated they had a campsite in the paddock behind. I checked it out only to find it was cow territory. In fact I sensed it had been a long time since anyone had actually camped there. Sensing my concerns with a bovine infested site, the old lady, leaving the tripe and grim, grey pates behind, showed me into the amenities block. She led me straight past the gents, to the ladies toilets where, in the corner, was a sofa and table. The lasses must have somewhere to natter when they go off two by two....... Vous dormirez ici the butchers wife suggested. Over the years Ive called a few toilets home. My preference is for the disabled unit. Usually clean, spacious and seldom used, theyve offered shelter in a few storms. Only once, in country Victoria, was I disturbed when a woman in a wheelchair actually had the temerity to want to use my bedroom! There was also an occasion when the cleaner turned up. Unfortunately I couldnt find the Do not disturb/Dont clean my room sign. Strangely enough, back home in Oz, I rent a former toilet block on a disused campground as the storeroom for my business! Have woken to pouring rain. The cows are wet, Im warm and dry. Up into the Vanoise today...
