According to Bassetts directory George Anderson had his gas company on the quay in Carrick in 1889. In 1914 Thomas Treacy took over the management of the gasworks in Carrick-on-Suir (located on the Quay), eventually buying the Carrick gasworks from the owner Treacys Difficulties in getting parts from England for gasworks repairs during World War II led to problems in manufacturing gas at the Carrick works so Thomas decided to switch to the making of charcoal and in 1942 the large gasometers were dismantled. The business eventually concentrated on the sales of coal, coke and briquettes, ..Treacys was called the Gas house when I was growing up.This picture shows coal being delivered to the yard. It would have come off one of the bigger boats and probably came from Waterford.Coal.I remember not too long ago seeing young boys borrowing a hand cart from Treacys and pushing bags of coal home to their houses on cold days like this.
