"According to The Star newspaper, this was after health MEC Hope Papo introduced a biometric verification system in March this year to weed out “ghost employees”. Premier Nomvula Mokonyane reportedly told journalists on Thursday that the initial focus was academic hospitals in the province, but the verification system would soon be rolled out to secondary and primary health care institutions. The Star reported that, at Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital, 85 employees failed to show up, even after a 10 day grace period following their pay day, resulting in a saving of R1.3m. At Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, the department saved R648,000 when 22 employees failed to show up. At the Steve Biko Academic Hospital, the government saved R328,000 when 13 did not report for work. According to the newspaper, the department enlisted the help of senior home affairs officials to ensure that details supplied during the verification were correct."
