According to Time magazine, The NY Times and other media outlets, meat and butter are back and can be eaten with abandon. These distorted headlines will lead many people to a needless premature grave, so it is important that you know the facts. In March 2014, a meta-analysis in the Annals of Internal Medicine concluded “Current evidence does not clearly support cardiovascular guidelines that encourage high consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids and low consumption of total saturated fats.” The media ran with it, claiming that everyone now has free rein to eat all the meat, butter and cheese they want with no consequences. The headlines were sensationalized misinterpretations of the science, and they have done a serious disservice to an already nutritionally confused and unhealthy public. Anyone who promotes the view that meat, butter and cheese are harmless has not done their homework; they have not scrutinized the totality of evidence on this topic.
