According to a new study, athletes who sustain concussions are 3.79 times more likely to experience a muscle or ligament injury in the same season after they return from their concussion as compared to their non-concussed teammates. This is definitely something we have seen at Kinetic Physical Therapy. The injuries have ranged from ACL tears to ankle sprains and stress fractures. This increased injury risk may be due to a loss of strength and neuromuscular control secondary to a period of inactivity during their recovery. There may be a very strong neurocognitive connection as well. For post-concussion rehabilitation services or a screen to determine if your athlete is at risk, give us a call at 610-458-6464 or e-mail at michellef@kineticptpa.
