According to a number of posts on FB lately I am an atrociously irresponsible dog owner. I have taken my dogs out for a walk every day this summer. Worse still, for the last 6 years we have taken them to central France on holiday, and we walk them there, too, where it is quite hot some days. This makes me an idiot at best, abusive at worst. They do not want to go out in this heat, and will not thank me for it, I am told.... So that is not them jumping up and down at the sight of the lead, or throwing themselves excitedly at the front door, then? It is a laughable fact that the UK does not cope well with a bit of warm weather, and goes into meltdown in more than one sense of the word. But dogs live in much hotter countries than this, and they are not all dropping dead all over the place from heat stroke. I walk mine mid evening, mainly between 5pm and 7.30pm, but it is still warm. We are lucky to have a couple of riverside walks, but even without those, there are things you can do.... You can choose shady walks, you can cut back on ball play, and, a particular favourite here, you can douse your dogs with water from a watering can before leaving home, and rub it well in, so that they get the benefit of the evaporation for the hour or so they are out. We do it when we are on holiday in France, and we have been doing it here. It makes Charlie go all silly-puppy
