According to a study conducted at North Dakota State University, the US fertilizer industry is going through major changes. The adjustment in the crop mix has resulted in an increase in fertilizer demand. At least 12-to-15 new fertilizer plants are being proposed in the US, including the CHS facility in Spiritwood and the Northern Plains Nitrogen project in Grand Forks, North Dakota. If these plants are realized, the NDSU study expects substantial changes in the flow and distribution of fertilizer projects. That includes fewer long-haul rail shipments. With new fertilizer plants proposed, margins are expected to tighten.
