According to my Snapple Bottle cap: It took Leonardo da Vinci 12 years to paint the lips of Mona Lisa. First he painted her with a full, toothy grin. No. Too much. Start again. A sly smile, no then hed have to change the look in her eyes. Then he did a half smile, but the other half looked depressed, then he tried several dozen other types of smiles. Eventually he put duct tape over her mouth and called it good. A museum curator a hundred years later pulled off the tape to expose what we see today. You can see why that took him so long. (And/or he was napping a lot for 12 years having spent the down payment on foolish things, like rent and food.)
