According to my dictionary, ศาสตราจารย์ - TopicsExpress

According to my dictionary, ศาสตราจารย์ means professor but I am not sure if that is the British or American meaning of professor. In the United States, all teachers at the college or university level are called professor. But in the UK, I understand that teachers are generally called lecturers, and the word professor is reserved for a high-level lecturer or department head (or something along those lines). So does ศาสตราจารย์ carry the American or British meaning of professor?
