According to our child survivors, being able to go to a camp with kids who are abuse survivors expedites the healing process because everyone “gets it” and all campers have similar stories is a wish granted in itself. I recently asked a teen survivor what she wanted as in a wish (a heart’s desire) being granted by Sparks of Hope, other than camp, this was her response: “Im not sure if I have a hearts desire. Im sure I do. . . I guess I just feel like there a lot of people who deserve it more than me. I dont feel like I would deserve something like that. . . That is probably the abused little girl in me --- who thinks she doesnt deserve anything good to happen to her.” I was moved to tears this morning reading this response. The “abused little girl” in her doesn’t think she deserves or is worthy of something such as a wish/heart’s desire being granted. The self-beliefs formed by a child survivor of abuse reap the greatest destruction – she struggles with her past and devalues herself constantly. The beautiful truth is that she IS WORTHY and deserving of such things. Looking forward to working with her to find out just what that wish is going to look like. The gift for her right now she says is having women who she can talk to and who are here to help her along her journey. ~ Lee Ann Mead
