According to religious legend, Helene Augustus, the mother of Constantine travelled to Jerusalem in around 325 AD to learn more about the crucifixion and to try to find the True Cross. She is believed to have found three crosses and to determine which is the cross used to crucify Jesus, she brings a dead girl to the site. When the girl is led on top of the True Cross she supposedly comes back to to life. The cross was said to have been divided; part of it is believed to have remained in Jerusalem while other parts were sent to religious leaders in Rome and Constantinople, which is the modern-day Istanbul in Turkey. The first written records of the story of Helena finding the True Cross appear by the end of the fourth century. Helena was later made a saint.
