According to some of the scientific publications on climate - TopicsExpress

According to some of the scientific publications on climate change, if we turned off every carbon emitting source right now, it would take 200 years to get back to the climate we had in 1975. 200 years. One of the major issues missed in the SIDS events was that Agriculture and not fossil fuels is the largest emitter on the planet releasing more then half of the 476 billion tonnes of carbon estimated to have been released into the atmosphere, half of which has been captured by our oceans (thankfully) which is unfortunately causing chaos with ocean acidification. So how do we fix this? Agriculture is both a major culprit and our best solution. The key is Humus which we commonly think of as soil although it is a bit more complex then that. We listened to a side event where an organic farming advocate stated that he had rebuilt soil organic matter (in the humus form) from 1% to 6% over 11 years of good farming practice. Does not seem significant until you understand what this means in regards to climate change. If for example the USA were to build 1% humus in their currently farmed soils they would sequester 50% of their total annual carbon emissions. Yes that number is 50%. If they continued the practice like the organic farmer then well, maths is maths and chemistry is chemistry. Reversal of climate change would be rapidly possible rather then waiting and living through climate change disasters for the next 500 years.
