According to the 1882 History of Madison County published by W. R. Brink and Company, early traditions dated the first settlements in Venice Township to 1804. The known settlers who were all located in the township before the War of 1812 were the families of George Caldwell, George Richardson, Robert McDow, John Atkins, and Daniel Lockhart. With the river as its western boundary, floods in the township were frequent and often devastating. But in spite of the difficulties, the population of Venice Township continued to grow. Shown here are two maps of the townships from 1861 (left) and 1908 (right).
