According to the PhDs we’ve interviewed, approximately 75% of the population is void of the GSTM1 gene, which is one of the main mold-detoxifying genes. Other enzymes are said to pick up the slack, but they may not detoxify mold as effectively. This type of genetic difference in people explains why some people have to detox longer to get effective results. When it comes to detoxifying mold, there is a double-edged sword. Scientific studies prove that when the human body detoxifies certain molds, by-product are created that can damage DNA. If the body is not able to repair the damaged DNA before the cell replicates, then cancer can form, because that is what cancer is: damaged cells that replicate before the body can repair them. For this reason, we believe it is beneficial for all people to follow a diet with reduced mold-and-mycotoxin content. Genetic differences definitely play a role in who gets sick from mold exposure and who gets cancer, but there is a lot we can do to aid our body’s detoxification pathways. First, we can identify and correct sources of indoor air contaminants in our work or home to reduce exposure levels; second, we can reduce sugar-laden and toxin-containing foods from our diet and instead choose foods that boost our body’s ability to detoxify; third, we can neutralize toxins to enable our body to more safely eliminate them; fourth, we can make food choices that increase the body’s ability to eliminate oil-based toxins; and fifth, we can boost our immune systems through food choices and various natural supplements. The human body is amazingly designed and can oftentimes heal itself up to a given point. For example, our bodies are designed to constantly repair cells in our bodies that get damaged. When everything is working efficiently in our bodies, we aren’t even aware this process is taking place. It is only when symptoms start to spring up that we realize we have a health concern that needs attention. Keeping a close eye on these symptoms, no matter how small, is important because they are our body’s way of communicating with us. When we were sick with mold- and mycotoxin-related illnesses after Hurricane Katrina, we closely monitored our symptoms and reactions to the changes we made in our diet and food supplements. What we realized is that simple changes often made a big difference in our health recovery process. Of course, these simple changes were only “simple” in hindsight, which is why we shared this type of information in our book to help other people battling mold-related illnesses. We included detailed information on mold, mycotoxins, and food in our book, because diet change played a significant role in our recovery process. The importance of these simple changes is further brought to light in interviews we conducted with several MDs and PhDs, who are leading experts in how mold and mycotoxins affect the human body. If anyone doubts the importance of detoxing, just read up on the connection between mold, mycotoxins, and cancer in our book, MOLD: The War Within.
