According to the late Prof Ali Mazrui, an intellectual is a person who has the capacity to be fascinated by ideas, and has acquired the skill to handle some of those ideas effectively. And there are different categories of intellectuals: academic intellectuals, literary intellectuals (journalists, poets, novelists and playwrights), political intellectuals (people in government, political parties or higher reaches of Civil and Diplomatic services), and general intellectuals (consumers of the literary, academic and political output such as school-teachers and professional people). NB.1. The artist or craftsman who doesnt innovate but simply follows a tradition is not likely to be an intellectual. 2. Some undergraduates are basically only temporary intellectuals because when they leave the university they gradually lose their capacity to be fascinated by ideas, or their ability to handle ideas, or both.
