According to the local papers solar time table, today we experience equal minutes of daylight and dark....a few days before the official event plays out down south at the equator. Aside from the celebratory festivities of this day involving descendants, luck, stew, potatoes, soda bread, setters, coffee, whiskey, and leprechauns; I positioned myself at the patio door to observe the celestial event of the rising sun. (I know, I know, I should have cranked up The Animals finest recording at the same time, but too much of the above said coffee, I suppose) And as the fiery orb cleared the horizon, it aligned, as always, with the last blueberry bush closest to the peach tree---several feet north from the end of the propane tank and the position of the rising winter solstice. (Ugh, that song again!) Anyway, when we built the house I guess we pretty much set-it-with-the-world, as the glaring sunbeams, twice a year, laser from the patio door through the living room and out the front window. In the evening its the opposite. And with all the glass fronted wall photos and stainless steel shrouded appliances, walking through the house is like hiking through a mirrored fun house with four welders burning at full arc. No wonder I pour coffee all over the counter and floor in the morning and stumble over the love seat in the evening. And while its great to see more daylight, a promise of warmer weather, gardens to plant and honeybees to check on, there are down sides as well. The magnificent illumination tremendously magnifies just how many windows needs washed. I suppose we cant put this chore off any longer.....we have plenty of daylight now, you know. Thank you very much, Equinox!
